Labor Day weekend: last splash before the close
What's open, what closes Tuesday, and the photo you'll wish you took.
Friday. Labor Day is here. For most of the country, this is the symbolic last weekend of splash pad season.
Make Labor Day intentional
Most municipal pads close the Tuesday after Labor Day. That makes Saturday and Sunday the last realistic visits of the year. The play: revisit your top 2 pads of the summer, take the season-end photo by the bucket dump, and let the kids choose the final pad they want to close out the year. Avoid trying a brand-new pad this weekend — the parking and crowds are worst, and a familiar pad gives the kids the closure they don't yet know they need. Bring a special snack. Stay an extra 20 minutes. Take the photo.
We're closing the season with a sentimental favorite — whatever pad your family adopted as 'ours' this summer. The flagship downtown pad is great, but the neighborhood pad with the slightly cracked concrete and the one wonky ground spray is the one your kids will remember in 10 years. Bring a slightly nicer snack. Take a deliberate photo at the spot where they had their best moment of the summer. Save it to a labeled folder.
Labor Day playbook
- Confirm closing dates — most close Tuesday, some run through mid-September.
- Avoid the flagship pad on Saturday afternoon; parking is a nightmare.
- Sunday morning at 9:30am is the calmest Labor Day pad window.
- Take the family photo deliberately; it's the last 'summer' photo of the year.
- Restock supplies on Tuesday clearance — sunscreen, water shoes, towels.
Have a beautiful Labor Day weekend. Talk Friday — we're shifting to off-season mode.
