Lightning detection
Definition
An electronic system that monitors nearby lightning strikes and triggers automatic closure of a splash pad when strikes occur within a defined radius.
Lightning detection systems (commercial brands include Thor Guard and Strike Guard) are common at larger municipal and private splash pads. They trigger an audible siren and posted warning when lightning is within 10 miles, and re-open after 30 minutes of all-clear.
Smaller municipal pads typically rely on attendants watching weather radar manually, or post 'close at your discretion' signage.
