Splash pad weather closure
Definition
A temporary shutdown triggered by thunderstorms, lightning within 10 miles, high winds, or extreme heat advisories.
Lightning is the most common weather closure trigger. Most parks departments use the National Weather Service 10-mile rule: if lightning strikes within 10 miles, the pad closes for 30 minutes after the last detected strike.
High-wind closures (typically 35+ mph sustained) protect kids from wind-blown debris. Heat closures are rarer but happen during 105°F+ heat advisories at unshaded pads.
