Are splash pads okay with tattoos?
Quick answer
Healed tattoos older than 4 weeks are completely fine at splash pads. Fresh tattoos under 4 weeks should stay covered and dry — splash pad water can introduce bacteria, fade ink, and cause scabbing problems. Cover with waterproof film if you must attend.
A fully healed tattoo (4+ weeks old, no scabs, no peeling) is unaffected by splash pad water. UV exposure is the bigger long-term concern — direct midday sun fades tattoos over years, so apply SPF 50+ on tattooed skin even on cloudy days. Fresh tattoos are different. The healing window is 2-4 weeks, during which the wound is open to bacteria and ink can wash out. Splash pad recirculating water hosts bacteria that have caused mycobacterial infections in fresh tattoos. If you have a fresh tattoo and must attend with kids, cover with Saniderm or Tegaderm waterproof film, change immediately after, and pat dry with a clean towel. Better: postpone the splash pad visit until your tattoo is healed.
