What head injury watch signs should I monitor after a splash pad fall?
Quick answer
Watch 24-48 hours for repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness or hard to wake, slurred speech, uneven pupils, severe or worsening headache, seizures, clear fluid from nose or ears, balance problems, or behavior changes. Any of these means immediate ER care, not a wait-and-see at home.
Most splash pad head bumps are minor and resolve with a cold pack and rest. The danger is a concussion or intracranial bleed that develops slowly. After any blow to the head, watch the child for 24-48 hours. Red-flag symptoms that require an immediate ER visit: vomiting more than once or twice; trouble staying awake or hard to rouse from sleep (it is fine to let them nap, but you should be able to wake them every couple hours and they should respond normally); slurred speech or trouble understanding; pupils that are different sizes or do not respond to light; severe, worsening, or unusual headache; seizure of any kind; clear fluid or blood from nose, ears, or mouth; balance loss or new clumsiness; vision changes; personality or behavior change; and in babies, a bulging soft spot or persistent inconsolable crying. Document the fall: height, surface, what was hit, was there loss of consciousness, did they cry immediately. ER doctors will ask all of these.
