How do you prime a splash pad pump?
Quick answer
Close all suction valves except one, fill the pump volute through the strainer basket cover, restore the lid with O-ring greased, open the suction valve, then start the pump. Watch for steady flow within 30-60 seconds. Air locks are the top cause of failed startups in spring. Never run dry.
Pump priming is the first task at spring startup and after any maintenance that breaks the suction line. Procedure: close all suction valves except the one you are priming. Open the strainer basket lid (centrifugal pumps) and pour clean water into the volute until full. Re-grease the lid O-ring with silicone pool lube and close. Open one discharge valve to vent air. Start the pump and immediately watch the sight glass or strainer basket β flow should establish within 30-60 seconds. If air bubbles persist past 90 seconds, shut down and re-prime. Running a centrifugal pump dry destroys the mechanical seal in minutes ($300-$800 repair). Common priming failures: leaking suction line gaskets, clogged strainer baskets, a foot valve stuck open, and high suction lift on remote installations. Submersible pumps prime automatically.
