How do I make a visual schedule for a splash pad outing with my autistic kid?
Quick answer
Use 5-7 photos in sequence: car, drive, park, walk to pad, splash, snack break, walk to car, drive home. Velcro on a folder or a laminated strip works. Review on the way there and check off each step. Predictability cuts anxiety dramatically.
Visual schedules transform splash pad anxiety into predictability for autistic kids. Build one with 5-7 photos showing the actual sequence: photo of your car, photo of the road or parking lot, photo of the splash pad entrance, photo of the kid splashing, photo of a snack, photo of leaving, photo of home or the car drive home. Use real photos when possible β generic clip art is less effective than 'our actual car.' Print, laminate (Scotch self-adhesive lamination is fine), and attach to Velcro on a small folder or a strip. Review on the drive there: 'first we drive, then we walk, then we splash.' Let the kid move a marker or remove a photo as each step completes β physical completion is more regulating than verbal acknowledgment. Apps that work well: Choiceworks, First Then, Visual Schedule Planner. The autism Society and Autism Speaks have downloadable templates. The schedule reduces meltdowns by replacing 'what's happening?' with 'I know what's next.'
